“My vision is basically reflected in my wines in the “Die Leidenschaft“ (The Passion) line. It is my aim to enhance the potential of the wines in the Kamp Valley and Strass, concentrating on their longevity and finesse by maturing them in small oak barrels. In my opinion, outstanding wines are the perfect combination of high quality grapes and the wine-grower’s sensitive use of oak.” -- Martin Arndorfer
Tasting Note:
100% Riesling from grand cru sites is aged and fermented in Austrian oak. Unlike the French who toast there barrels over fire, Austrian barrels are formed over steam. The resulting wine gains complexity, richness and texture but only subtle oak character, without bold smoky notes. Fruity and floral notes, but not fruit driven. Minerality and earthy tones carry the day with a touch of spiciness on the finish.
Vintage Report: 2005
An outstanding vintage especially for dry whites. Expect pure fruit, elegant acidity and good ripeness. With a rainy and cool fall, producers were forced to reduce yields to achieve full ripeness, but those who did produced exceptional wines.
Terroir: Strass - Kamptal Valley - Austria
Geologically, the soil dates back 270 million years and is composed of desert sandstone with volcanic particles. Farms are perched on steep terraces above the Danube river and produce strong, mineral wines which, above all, age extraordinarily well.
Grape Variety: Riesling
Riesling is considered to be one of the world's great white-wine grapes and produces some of the very best white wines. The Riesling grape's ability to retain its acidity while achieving high sugar levels creates wines with balance and considerable aging potential. Riesling wines tend to be fragrant and lively with fine-fruity bouquets, reminiscent of apples and citrus fruits. They have a pronounced racy acidity and can develop honey and petrol characters with age.
