A brief history of Slovenia:Slovenia has been part of the Roman Empire; partly the Republic of Venice; the principality of Carantania (only modern Slovenia's northern part); the Holy Roman Empire; the Habsburg Monarchy; the Austrian Empire (later known as Austria-Hungary); the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (renamed to Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1929); partly Kingdom of Italy; between the two World Wars occupied by Germany, Italy, Hungary, and Independent State of Croatia (1941–1945); and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia from 1945 until independence in 1991.
Tasting Note: Burja 2006Rich and complex with intriguing texture. Apple and melon fruit give way to honey and toast. Plenty of minerality and acid on the finish. Great structure from 20% of the fermentation on the skins. Aged for 11 months in the 500 Liter old oak barrels the wine ferments in without fining.
Terroir: Podraga - Vipava Valley - SloveniaThe Vipava valley wine region lies midway between Trieste and Ljubljana. This delightful corner of South-West Slovenia is a highly varied geographical area just across the border from Friuli, Italy. Not surprisingly its climate mirrors its varied terrain with a unique blend of mild Mediterranean and continental Alpine temperatures that produce some very special grapes. The soil is primarily ocean sediment with a sandy brown top layer mixed with marlstone.
Varieties: Rebula - Malvasia - WelschrieslingRibolla (in Slovenian: Zlata rebula) is a white Italian wine grape believed to have originated in Greece and made its way up to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia by way of Slovenia. Malvasia [malva'zi:a] is a group of wine grape varieties grown historically in the Mediterranean region and the island of Madeira. Welschriesling (aka riesling italico) is an ancient variety of white wine grape that is unrelated to the Rhine Riesling. It is grown throughout Central Europe. A really versatile variety, a wide range of wines can be produced from it.
